Prepare to be moved to emotion, drawn into your own memories of people and places, when you view the art of Alice Flynn.  The academic may view Alice's paintings with an eye for the formal elements of composition, tracing the line of shape and color from the head of a dog to the brim of a hat in "Blackie and Pete".  The shape of a shadow cast by a tree or figure is as important as any other detail.  Whether painting an open landscape that evokes Montana, or the peak of a volcano in El Salvador, Alice's work depicts a soulful connection to her art and an understanding of the post-impressionist ideas of shape, line and color, the elements Cezanne brought forth in modern art, making painting an end in itself.

Expect to be drawn immediately from the formal elements of painting to the evocative images of figures and landscapes that are the subject of Alice's work.  In  her own words, Alice states, "Becoming an artist set me on a path to find my place in my family and in Montana. It became a visual expression that is a celebration of the strength of self reliance and independence.  The landscape in which I place figures is expressed like a memory or a dream, an archetypal Montana place of airiness, atmosphere, endless horizon and soft layers of color.  The joy I find in my work involves creating lines and shapes of color.  Seeing a horizon line or the head of a figure come forth like a melody line across the canvas, with repeated notes, one beat picking up and carrying to the next - this gives me a thrill when I paint.  It is an added thrill to have a viewer emotionally connect to the images I create."

Born in Great Falls in 1951 and raised in Helena, Montana,  Alice moved to Bozeman in 1970 to study fine art at MSU with teachers Bob DeWeese and Jessie Wilber.  Her degree in 1974 in painting and print making began a professional career in fine art and illustration.  Her paintings, drawings and prints are in both private and public collections.  Her illustrations include book cover art for Penguin Putnam, magazine illustration and souvenir illustration for national parks and resorts.
