About Absaroka Tennessee Walking Horses

Absaroka Tennessee Walking Horses is nestled in the East Rosebud Valley just north of the Absaroka/Beartooth Wilderness Area.  Over the mountains in this picture lies Yellowstone National Park.  Our facility boasts a state of the art indoor riding arena with rest rooms, artificial insemination laboratory, tack room, and office.  Our 1200-acre ranch, settled by Emily's grandfather Magnus Johnson in the 1890's, straddles the East Rosebud River.  A log bunkhouse provides space for visitors, some of whom bring horses to ride on our ranch and in the nearby wilderness area, and we have several electrical hookups for RVs.

We are a full-service Tennessee Walking Horse facility, and we're extremely anxious to match you with the Walker of your dreams. With the addition of a registered Suffolk Punch stallion, we can also breed mares for those who desire the draft crosses so popular today.  Call, write, or E-mail to tell us just how we can be of service to you. Or visit us at the ranch. We're located just 18 miles south of I-90 in south-central Montana. Exit at Columbus (between Billings and Bozeman), come south on Highway #78 to Absarokee, then four more miles south to the ranch.  From the south, travel from Cody, Wyoming to Red Lodge, Montana, then come 29 miles north on #78.

·         Horses and Mules for Sale -- We produce first-rate young stock from our own stallions and brood mares. Customers can see parents and usually siblings of the horses they're considering, so that an entire legacy can be studied. We take deposits on baby colts for pick-up at weaning time, and we usually have yearlings, two-year-olds, and trained saddle horses for sale.

·         Stud Service -- Featuring Absaroka Silver Dollar, An Officer and a Gentleman, and Buck’s Gold Nugget (TWHBEA)), and Timber of Bee Tree (registered Suffolk Punch stallion).

·         Training -- We occasionally have room to accept outside horses for training.  Our training is eclectic, gentle but firm, with much emphasis on steadiness in gait and on trail skills.

·         Publications -- A free-lance writer, Dan Aadland has published in many periodicals including Western Horseman, Equus, Horse and Rider, The Western Horse, Trail Rider, Bugle, Wyoming Wildlife, Montana Outdoors, The Big Sky Journal, and others.  He also teaches writing workshops.  Nine of his ten books--Treading Lightly with Pack Animals, Horseback Adventures, Sketches from the Ranch: A Montana Memoir, The Complete Trail Horse, 101 Trail Riding Tips, The Best of All Seasons, In Trace of TR, The Pocket Guide to Equine Knots, and Train your horse for Backcountry Riding deal with horses, each featuring Tennessee Walking Horses in western settings. Ask for them at your local bookstore, or contact Dan for autographed copies.

·         Horseback Vacations -- Consider bringing your horses to our 1200 acre ranch for a vacation consisting of horseback riding on our property and into the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness area.  Most of the trailheads are only a half hour to an hour away.  We offer lodging in the bunkhouse (beds for four in two separate bedrooms) and water/electricity hookups for RVs adjacent to our indoor riding arena, available for your use.  The East Rosebud River runs through the ranch and offers excellent trout fishing.  Yellowstone Park is just two hours away, and if you wish you can leave your mare with us for breeding while you tour the Park.
