Teaching in a one-room schoolhouse is an entire family enterprise: My husband, Ron, gets to dump garbage, blade the driveway, pick up supplies and books in town, and drive on field trips. He also somehow manages to work a full-time job. My kids get to help clean and organize things, share their toys, and help with tasks such as turning the eggs we are incubating on the weekends.
Even the pets have duties. The cats are on Mouse Patrol, and are responsible for keeping the mice at bay, and Greta, the family/school pet Rottweiler, does Mountain Lion duty each recess, as the Game Warden says that mountain lions won't usually come around where there is a dog. Greta is like the 14th kid here. She spends all day with the kids, from stealing their balls at recess to being a pillow during reading time. I don't know what the poor dog will do when I get a real job where she can't come with us!
As you can see, teaching here is a full time job by itself - not to mention being a wife and mother too. Despite all the work, I really enjoy my job. We have a great school with tremendous community support. The scenery cant't be beat. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
